Pia Toscano Voted Off American Idol last night

We at TV Fiends love American Idol. We have watched every season of Idol with unnatural interest. We HATED Adam Lambert during his season. We wanted anyone but Adam to win. We celebrated when he came in second, because we were in full hate mode about Adam. We then proceeded to fill our iPods with Adam Lambert music once he released For Your Entertainment. He’s on our workout mix. Why? Because we love us some American Idol — it’s not just Adam Lambert music on our iPod, either. We have multiple songs by multiple Idol artists.

But we need to say this: While we like this season of Idol a ton more than we thought we were going to, someone needs to give the judges some haterade in their Coca-Cola cups. These American Idol judges are being too nice. We need more critical analysis — we’re tired of J-Lo and Steven Tyler loving everything. Ryan said at the beginning of the results show that everyone delivered last night. Ok … except that was just wrong.

For instance, Stefano’s performance was a summer-sun-heated mess. It stank so damn bad. We took it as an opportunity to walk away from the TV. J-Lo and Tyler LOVED it, though. Who did American Idol viewers agree with, J-Lo/Tyler or TV Fiends? TV Fiends. Stafano was the first to receive his invitation to the bottom three.

We love J-Lo and Steven Tyler as American Idol judges — they just need to be a little more honest. The music business isn’t all people being told how awesome they are. It’s brutal. J-Lo and Tyler aren’t doing these contestants any favors by sugar coating every single American Idol judges’ segment. We’re just saying …

What else are we saying? We love us some “Unchained Melody.” It is one of our favorite songs. Just not when Constantine sings it. He performed it on this week’s American Idol results show, and it didn’t do anything for us. But we were never Constantine people anyway. Even we’ve never bought any of his music — which takes a lot when an American Idol artist is involved. Constantine was nominated for a Tony this year. We don’t know why or for what. But obviously he needs to stick to that instead of releasing records even hardcore American Idol lovers won’t buy.

We also should note that we are Scotty McCreery partisans at TV Fiends. We voted for him 40 times, then worried about whether we should vote some more. He was safe … we were happy.

American Idol bottom three:

We were shocked, though, when Pia wound up in the bottom three. She sang “Deep River Mountain High” by Tina Turner. We love music, so we have a lot of favorite songs, and that is one of our favorite songs and artists. Pia did NOT live up to Tina, but that’s an impossible standard. She sang the hell out of that song, as American Idol performances go. We have no idea why that performance landed her in the American Idol bottom three.

But that does point to the problem with the judges loving everything. They are not giving America direction. And when American Idol voters have no direction, sometimes people like Pia — a girl who can sing it loud-good — wind up in the bottom three. The American Idol judges need to be more critical if they want to stop things like Pia winding up in the bottom three.

Jacob rounded out the bottom three with his performance of “Man in the Mirror.” Again (notice the theme) the American Idol judges loved it. We hated it. It was a weak, forgettable rendition of the song, but the judges slobbered all over Jacob when he was done. The praise was not deserved. We were unsurprised to see him in the bottom three. Our advice to Idol contestants: If you are going to sing Michael Jackson, bring it. Otherwise, you’re going to have to take it … home.

Iggy Pop performed as we waited to see which one of the bottom three would go home. Our take away from Pop’s American Idol performance? Iggy Pop needs to wear a shirt at all times. By the way, who is Iggy Pop and why should we care about him? His performance didn’t answer either question, and it was just down right disconcerting. (By the way, we know who Pop is — we just hated his performance so much that we felt the need to get a little bit evil about it.)

Who was voted off American Idol last night:

And then the big Secrest reveal: Pia Toscano was voted off American Idol last night. Totally undeserved. Especially given given how awful Stefano and Jacob were — just dreadful performances last night. We blame the judges. Be critical. Lead the public with honest analysis. They did this.

We are disgusted. Pia did not deserve to go home. We’re voting for Scotty 45 times next week. We need to protect our boy.
